For the first time in his career, Bob Dylan was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature 2016 for creating new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition. Active since the 1960's, Dylan has been a figure to pacifist and civil rights movements in America. He specializes in folk, blues, and rock music.
However, controversy spurred as Bob Dylan didn't respond to his award for a solid five days. To add fuel to the fire, friends and family called him but with no avail. Previous winners of the Nobel Peace Prize (Jean-Paul Sartre, etc.) have refused to accept the prize but are still listed as winners. The Nobel Peace Prize symbolizes the prestigious institutions that Dylan rebelled against. Whether Dylan will be present to the ceremony is still to be determined.
Update:
Bob Dylan will not travel to Stockholm, Sweden to receive his Nobel Peace Prize in person due to " pre-existing commitments." He still expressed gratitude for receiving the award and wished that he could receive it in person. There have been other Nobel laureates in the past who were unable to attend the ceremony and their prizes were still awarded. The only requirement is that Dylan present a Nobel Lecture within six months. Representative for Dylan have yet to comment.
