Make-Up the times

Makeup has adapted throughout the times to build self confidence and embrace femininity. Here's how makeup has evolved throughout the years.

In the 1920's, new freedom and industrialization gave women were the ability to pursue their looks and change what was considered "beautiful."

Typical look of the 1920's:

Eyes- lined with kohl eye shadow and liner.

Eyebrows- plucked and drawn downward towards the temple

Lips- drawn smaller than the natural outline and in a "cupid's bow"

Lashes- mascaro (mascara) was applied with a brush

Blush- rogue was applied in circles to create a more rounded face

Nails- "moon manicures" were popular as it only painted the tip of the nail.

In the 1930's, cinema influenced the look women strove for. Easier to access and use, makeup truly started to flourish.

Typical look of the 1930's:

Eyes- various colors were applied lightly and in pear shapes above the natural eye

Eyebrows- plucked completely and redrawn in pencil thin lines arched upwards

Lips- Thin horizontal lines with a larger upper lip

Lashes- applied mascara to only the lower lashes

Blush- applied in a triangle to give a contoured effect

Nails- Same as 1920's except effort was made to match nail color to lip color

In the 1940's, WWII made women focus on convenience. Compacts allowed women to put makeup while they were at work. Limitations on manufacturing was placed in Europe since makeup wasn't essential to make.

Typical look of the 1940's:

Eyes- Neutral eye shadows.

Eyebrows- Thick and groomed into an arched shape.

Lips- Outlined to make lips larger and red was the most common color.

Lashes- mascara applied on lashes with a brush

Blush- rose colors on the apples of the cheeks

Nails- Filed to a point with the tip unpainted

In the 1950's, post-war beauty icons set the standards and women focused on preserving their youth. Eye shadows were introduced in palettes and shimmer was added. Lash curlers and eyebrow stencils were also introduced.

Typical look of the 1950's:

Eyes- Subtle shadows with a shimmer underneath the brow and a wing of eyeliner

Eyebrows- Shaded with a slightly darker shade than natural hair and groomed to be tapered and feminine

Lips- Drooped at the corners to achieve a "smile" effect

Lashes- Mascara was subtle and applied to the upper lashes

Blush- Pastel and pink colors were applied to the apples of the cheeks

Nails- Filed to a point and painted red

In the 1960's, the London fashion explosion was what set the beauty standards. Although there was three variations, the most popular one was the "mod" look. Beauty and hair tutorials were introduced by British fashion models.

Typical look of the 1960's:

Eyes- Black liner was doubled up at the end of the lid and white eyeliner was drawn over the upper lid to the inner corner of the eye. The most popular eye shadow palette had blue, grey, and white.

Eyebrows- Natural with a slight arch

Lips- Outlined with a pencil and filled in with very pale pink or red

Lashes- False lashes were applied to both the top and bottom lashes

Blush- Very lightly placed pink or none at all

Nails- Red was painted on the natural shape of the nail or no paint at all was applied

In the 1970's, women strayed away from the "mod" look and favored more natural and athletic one.

Typical look for the 1970's:

Eyes- Shimmer eye shadows were used on the eyelids

Eyebrows- "clear" mascara is used to brush and tame natural brows Lips- shiny clear glosses or pink and nude lipsticks coat the lips

Lashes- False lashes are made to look more natural and mascara is applied to the top and bottom lashes

Blush- Bronzer was applied and berry shades were placed on the apples of the cheeks Nails- No polish was applied

In the 1980's, cosmetics released their most colorful palettes yet and every women try to stand out of the crowd.

Typical look for the 1980's:

Eyes- Colorful and neon eye shadows were placed all over the lid or dark eyeshadows were applied

Eyebrows- Thick natural eyebrows

Lips- Pencils were used to overdraw the natural line and filled in with bright colors

Lashes- Mascara on the top and bottom lashes

Blush- Applied in a harsh straight line with berry shades

Nails- Light shimmer shades were popular to fill in the natural shape of the nail

In the 1990's, emphasis was placed on women looking good for themselves rather than men. This change in marketing was a successful as movements such as the Riot Grrl were at their golden age.

Typical look for the 1990's:

Eyes- White eyeliner was applied to the lower lash line and neutral eye shadows created depth. The most popular "odd" color was blue. Glitter eye shadows were also applied.

Eyebrows- Supermodels had thick eyebrows but a majority of women had pencil-thin brows

Lips- Brown was a common color applied to the lips. A darker colored pencil outlined the lips while a slightly lighter shade filled the lips.

Lashes- Mascara on the top and bottom lashes

Blush- Placed a bronze shade on the cheekbones or none at all

Nails- Blue was a popular color as well as purple.

In the 2000's, technology wasn't the only thing to change. Women spent a record high on cosmetics. Elements from all previous decades were combined for better or worse.

Typical look for the 2000's:

Eyes- Frost eye shadows were applied all over the lid. The most popular color was icy blues, purples, and reds.

Eyebrows- Pencil thin eyebrows from the 90's transitioned into this decade

Lips- Brick red or loads of clear gloss was the norm

Lashes- Falsies gained popularity again and were applied to top and bottom lashes

Blush- Rosy colors or bronzer was applied to the apple of the cheeks

Nails- Acrylic nails in a square shape was popular. French manicures also gained momentum.

In the 2010's, the drastic looks from the past were toned down for a more glamour look.

Typical look for the 2010's:

Eyes- White eyeliner was placed on the rim of the lower lash line, Colorful eyeliner was also used occasionally.

Eyebrows- Natural brows that were slightly thin or groomed to their natural arch.

Lips- Bold lip colors were the main stand out factor of most beauty looks.

Lashes- Large and feminine styled falsies took this decade by storm.

Blush- Pink blush was lightly applied to the cheeks.

Nails- The introduction of the gel manicure meant longer lasting polish for nails. Also, nail art was a way for women to showcase intricate designs on their fingertips.

Flash forward to 2017, the decade of 2020 has yet to be complete. Here is what currently stands as beauty is driven more by individualism and diversity than any other decade.

Typical look for 2017:

Eyes- Monochrome eye shadows and sharp cat eyeliner are showcased throughout beauty guru's and social media.

Eyebrows- Thick and arched eyebrows became popular and the term "on fleek" was used to describe them.

Lips- Overdrawn with lip liner and filled in with liquid matte lipstick.

Lashes- Falsies have the most variety and come in single lash packs now.

Blush- Highlighter has come to replace blush as women want more of a contoured and defined look.

Nails- Filed to a point and painted with matte nail polish.
